People are often quite struck by the fact, they apparently can't move a clip precisely, just trim it. And yes: paste silence before = move forward cut an empty region of the track before = move backwards Many NLE apps, e.g. Ardour (for sound) have a properties box for every clip, where you can just type in the exact start position and length.
