The Chain Tape Collective recently completed a restoration/re-scoring
of the German Expressionist classic The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari.
The restoration portion of the project was completed using an early
build of Cinelerra-cvs 2.0 running on Fedora Core 4.
Source footage for the project came from the public domain 16mm
reduction print of the film ==> 2" video tape ==> MiniDV.
Source footage was captured from a JVC MiniDV deck via firewire using
Kino. Footage was then de-interlaced and reduced from 29.97 fps to 24
fps to more closely approximate the orignal 18fps running speed of the
original film. Film workprint format was Quicktime/yuv420p.
While the restoration isn't definitive by any means due to the dodgy
quality of the available source footage, contrast and framing were
improved, the six act structure from the original scenario was restored,
a tint was added, and new intertitles were created (with The Gimp) after
the style of the originals.
Eleven composers from the collective worked together in Exquisite
Corpse fashion to score one of each of the 6 acts, producing two new and
complete soundtracks for the film.
The film itself is in the public domain. The visual enhancements and
music are licensed under a Creative Commons
Non-Commercial/Share-Alike/Attribution 3.0 license.
The film is available for download in high quality x.264 format in a
single file with both soundtracks here -- view with mplayer or a newish
