For now Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express seats make a lot more
sense. They work flawlessly, even on 5 year old g4 (~500 MHz) machines.
The cost for both hardware and software in prohibitive though.

is it really necessary to say things everybody knows?

...for which values of "everybody"? If you ask whether editing
video on Linux is easy, the answers will vary greatly, depending
on whom you ask.

You came into linux editing because you were told it waseasier and simpler?

Maybe he was. If you compare Kino on a good day with Pinnacle
having a bad hair day, Kino can look pretty darn good.

But I think that's beside the point. I'm a Linux user first, and
a video geek second. If I can't do it on Linux, it just won't get
done. I'm not putting up with EULAs and "product activation" to
get reasonable performance and usability. As far as I'm concerned,
"the right tool for the job" just doesn't exist.

I will have to admit that I have not looked at some of the work that
has been announced recently. It makes me think that I must be
doing something wrong, but I've been playing with the source
for a while now. It compiles, it runs, but it is slow, crashes
in almost every session and the render formats are somewhat
limited.

uffff, and so what? I really think first part of this mail is useless, although i can understand frustration lead to that.....i find more contructive next part of your mail.....

For what it is worth, I am "throwing my weight around" (using my
authority) now:

I allow venting. Not abusive ranting, but venting like the above
is OK with me. I will allow more venting than I used to, because we
now see an increased willingness to do something about it. Not the
venting, but the problems causing it.

Therefore I don't think venting and gentle rants are bad for morale.
Not anymore. Programs that are "good enough" don't get fixed. So
please remind us that Cinelerra is not good enough, and try and make
good suggestions that are useful to the developers at the same time.
