i388 means that it will run on everything since the 386 processors. This code is totally unoptimized and so can be slower than code optimized for Pentium II processors (i686). The i686 code will not run (it may just crash) on anything less than a Pentium II. But, as you well know, the Pentium IIs started back in the 200mhz days, so you're good. Sometimes you'll also see i586 for a straight pentium.
However, if your Xeon is faster than 1.5Ghz then you should be able to use the Pentium4 version. Otherwise stick with i686. How new is this computer?
