Hello,

first, I want to congratulate everyone involved (quite a community I
guess) with Cinelerra. I'm also an open source fan, not only because of
the fact that it's free, and good software, but mostly because of the
ideology behind it.

I'm not a programmer myself, and find it hard to contribute to the
community. I do want to contribute, and that might be best with my
experience in using software. I've tried a lot of software, and
definatly for audio and video.

I have some comments on cinelerra that I want to point out, and that you
might think about. I'm making the comparison with audio software, since
there is a lot in common with these types of software (like the
timeline).

1. Non-destructive editing.
Indeed, the source-files are not changed when cutting splicing, pasting
parts. Some tools within the program are though.

Labels: Information can be stored within a label, to give it a name, or
to write down why the label is put there. But labels can't move. You've
got to 'un-label' the position, and label another position. The result
is "destructive". The information within the label is gone.

Suggestion: It would be extremely usefull if labels can be moved over
the timeline.

2. Edit window versus timeline
Why can't the video in the timeline be spliced? A seperate edit window
is essential when working with different source files indeed, but very
often it is necessary to edit a clip directly in the timeline. A simple
example is that for a musicvideo, which many people want to make.
Splitting a clip and being able to move that clip from within the
timeline, to the next beat in the song, is essential. I guess you could
call it 'syncing'.

Suggestion: Give the timeline the same tools to edit video (splice,
overwrite etc... ) as the video-edit window.

3. Selection of clips:
I find it really annoying to continuesly have to arm,and un-arm tracks.
It makes me spend useless time.

Suggestion: Please make it possible to select and move one clip without
having to un-arm the other tracks.

I hope you don't find me annoying with my comments. I'm just starting
with cinelerra too, and the previous video-editing software I used was
"Vegas-Video" of Sonic Foundry. There these options I've written about
are possible.

I'm working on a video now, if you'd find my comments usefull, I do can
send you more e-mails ofcourse. Again, saddly enough, I can't program.

I do hope I mailed the right person for this, since there was only one
e-mail adress from an actual person.

best regards,

Bart
