You might even be able to skip the Mini-DV tape step.  If you have an NTSC 
camcorder, once you configure it to input S-Video, you should just be able to 
stream it over the 1394 port, as if you were playing back from tape.

If memory serves, you would leave the camera in the same mode you would if you 
were going to hit the record button - you just never hit the record button.  
The video should then also be present on the 1394 stream for Kino or dvgrab 
to play with.

When I was originally trying to figure out how to do this, there were some 
web-references to the effect that all NTSC camcorders support this, but for 
whatever reason the PAL camcorders are hit and miss with their support - 
something to do with the expense of putting in an A/D converter.
