I was thinking about one machine, with enough ram to handle about 10
OpenVZ Virtual Environments, Debian/Ubuntu/SuSE on i386 should be
enough for a start, maybe amd64?
I am not suggesting to do everything at once, but getting started,
doing something small, and then moving on should be possible.
