Wow, moderated even! Good stuff. As large as possible target areas and highlighting are the right ideas. But I think the large rectangles are unnecessary and distracting. Just highlight the nodes instead. The CAD app Solidworks does that for points and edges and the like and it works well. It encourages to not aim more precisely than necessary, but does not add anything new on the screen that might obfuscate what is already there. You might want to add a make-node-jump-to-cursor action to middle-click or some modifier-click.
