As I understand it, the font file which you load into your graphics
software is, fundamentally, software and is the thing that the font
license applies to.  The image containing words typeset in the font is
the *output* of the font file.  The author of the font file isn't legally
permitted (though many will try) to place conditions on the output of the
software.  It's much like the difference between the license on GCC (the
compiler) and a program compiled with GCC (the output of the compiler).
