If you load the project with "create new resources only" it will just
populate the resources view with the assets you had in the project
file, but it won't load all the timeline (EDL) information. At least
this is my understanding.

I tried the 'create new resources only' workaround and several others
proposed including the one I found of deleting the idx and toc files for
the project resources in the .bcast directory. None of them work
reliably. I have found that Cinelerra hangs most often on large
projects. I have been able to get around the hang sometimes by loading a
very small project just to get things started and then load the project
I really want to work on.
Once Cinelerra hangs on me, it has to be killed and it almost never
loads another project until I log out. Sometimes, it actually requires a
reboot. I have noticed that I am most successful at loading a project
after a fresh reboot.
I have posted before that this seems like a resource deadlock. Of course
this is just a guess. The required logout or reboot seems to indicate
that killing Cinelerra does not necessarily free the condition that is
causing the hang, so if it is resource contention, then it may be
external to Cinelerra or killing Cinelerra with xkill may leave
something behind.
