I also use Debian Etch (pentium4 though). It's been quite some time since I could update cin using the cv way, so I've using an older version (from october 2007 or so, I guess). I works perfectly and I'm very happy with it, so I never bothered trying to work around this issue. Basically, I went to the repo and downloaded the .deb for cin and its dependencies and dpkg-ed them.
Last month, I also had to do an instalation tutorial, so I installed a Debian Etch from zero inside a virtualbox (a debian inside a debian). There, I tried to compile cinelerra-4 - the official, from heroine warrior - and everything went just fine. I haven't had the time to actually test it thoroughly, but in case you may want a link, here it is: http://banto.hipatia.net/blog/spip.php?article595 have fun, flavio
