I did read:

and found it a little confusing.

- If Cinelerra crashes when loading a Quicktime movie, it is most
likely because the format was not supported.
- you may not be able to play all AVI formatted files.
- MPEG If the file is unsupported, it usually crashes or shows very
short tracks.

After reading the manual It sounds like there is no format guaranteed to work.

I have found the VLC site does a good job documenting their compatibilities:

Could the cinelerra web page show something similar ?
