I think that the fact of being expensive or not doesn't describe
properly the difference between working with proprietary or open source
software, you'll just have to spend money for different things, but
you'll need money in either situation; for example being able to manage
the source code is needed if you want to "work" and "produce" something
as peter wrote...

I like the metaphor of the painter, I've been deciding to use open
source software thanks to the teaching of a painting master at the
accademy of art; what we pointed with that master sounded very similar
to what peter has said :)
