The GUI is out-of-date, but there is a successor project on the way.
So, instead of investing into an old thing, consider contributing
to the new editor Lumiera which will eventually replace Cinelerra.
Have a look at http://lumiera.org/
There is a also developer's mailing list like this one here.
If they need something that can be used in production, Cinelerra can
have any _minor_ flaws patched and tested in a few months. Quirks
in the GUI are fairly minor challenges to a developer in this context.
Lumiera may be ready for production in two or three years. Maybe.
One year is just too little time, even for a beta.
That being said, developers can still get inspiration from the
Lumiera project to improve on what they already have. It's a
think-tank, not fettered by existing designs and features.
