I would never try to use a large number of files, you're just asking for
trouble.

I would break the project into pieces, with maybe eight files per piece.
Load the eight files, do your editing, render a file. Repeat 20-odd
times.

Then I would aggregate five pieces, render the result, repeat three more
times. Finally, pull it all together -- if you actually need to.

You haven't said what your final product will be. A DVD? Postings on
Youtube? A presentation on your PC? Bear in mind that most people do not
have tolerance for more than about 40 minutes of "my summer vacation" in
one sitting.

I'm currently working on a project with nearly an hour of video. My end
product will be seven postings on Youtube, but I will also aggregate
them onto a DVD to give to a handful of people.
