I cannot help with gnome since I don't use it.
You may try to launch, from the menu, a script containing something like 
'LANG=fr_FR cinelerra &'.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually "LANG=fr_FR cinelerra" works in a console but i can't use the 
parameter LANG before cinelerra in the Menu. I get an error message 
"Impossible to launch cinelerra" Gnome seems to not understand the LANG 
parameter from the menu...
