I'm quite new to this, so in principle I wouldn't be very worried about
the quality loss per conversion stage. However, it also happens that I'm
a bit of a psycho with this kind of thing, so I've done some tests
recently. Basically I loaded into Cinelerra the best quality encoding I
had available and rendered it to YUV 4:2:0 planar. Then I re-encoded it
to mpeg4 using the same quantisers. Visual comparison of the three clips
revealed nothing initially. Rendering the same frames to pngs and
comparing them with imagemagick did show clear differences after
"stretching" the contrast. Once I learned what to look at I could spot
the changes by flipping between frames quickly.

My (obviously subjective) conclusion was that I can withstand two
conversion steps quite happily for my own use case.
