I have been checking out Cinellera from time to time for several years now, but
have not figured out how to use it. A large part of my problem may be that I
need a "paradigm shift". I have been using the commercial video software
"Pinnacle Studio" for Windows by Avid for many years now. For simple things, it
is very easy to use and very intuitive. It is also quite powerful, but I rarely
use the more complex functions.

After seeing a friend demonstrate Adobe's video editing software, I came to the
conclusion that Cinelerra's "look and feel" is similar to Adobe's Production
Premium, which is VERY different than that of Pinnacle.

I would very much like to get away from Windows completely, but until I can
figure out how to do even the simple things in Cinellera, I am "stuck".

None of these tutorials have been able to help me much:
# Cinelerra Tutorial - Getting Started, by Rob Fisher.
# Cinelerra for Grandma , Basic HOWTOs for very beginners, by Raffaella
Traniello.
# Cinelerra - The forgotten guide , a tutorial for both CV and HV versions by
Joseph Miller
# Cinelerra in 30 minutes and 10 steps - in English and Italian - Cinelerra
basics, for Grandma, by Raffaella Traniello.
# Cinelerra is very easy - in English and Italian - Introduction toCinelerra,
for beginners, by Paolo Rampino.
# Cinelerra quick start summary, by Eli Billauer.

This is what I wish to do.

To start with, assume that everything I do is in NTSC form. My input media
files will be one of the following:

.mpg, .avi, .mod or .vob (the latter is really .mpg but as produced by my DVD
recorder, or DVDs that I have produced using Pinnacle). These files are
generally 720X480 29.97 fps either 4:3 or 16:9 and either interlaced or
progressive depending upon the original source.

.mpg, .mod and .vob are MPEG-2 740X480 and either 4:3 or 16:9
.avi are DV

The sound is included in the files and is usually 2 channel stereo with a
sample rate of 48KBS.

The most daunting aspect (for me) in trying to use Cinelerra is the choice of
the various formats.

I simply want to import the media and produce an output in NTSC either MPEG-2
with audio or DV (i.e. .avi) with stereo audio, which I want to remain
correctly synched to the video. I want the same aspect ratio as the original
(either 4:3 or 16:9). Should I convert these to some other format before
importing them?

To start with, I would be happy to do simple things like cutting out bits and
pieces and possibly rearranging scenes. This part of Cinelerra I think I
understand.

I think that if I were able to master this process (which I am certain is VERY
easy for most of the subscribers to this list).

I realize that, once the video output file is created by Cinelerra, I will need
to use something else to actually produce a DVD (standard or progressive NTSC,
4:3 or 16:9). If you could recommend the best way (in LINUX) to do this, I
would appreciate it.

Thanks

Murray
