What exactly is happening? Is your ubuntu hard locking, rebooting,
kernel panic ...? Or just the program rendering? If, as I'm
understanding from your question, your computer is shutting down or
freezing you should take a look at the log:
sudo cat /var/log/messages

Your problems might be related also to overheating. Please make sure
you aren't overclocking any parts, this also may make your computer
unstable. Consider running the memtest supplied on the ubuntu bootdisk
also, let it run to make sure you don't have problems with your
memory. Rendering is very hard on both the processor and memory, so if
there are some problems on those components, it might be bringing
otherwise invisible problem visible.
