First of all, thanks for all your suggestions! I didn't know about trinity, and I'll certainly try it to see if that gives improvement over KDE4; then again, this will almost certainly not fix the problems and annoyances with printing, firewire and proprietary codecs.
In all, I think I'll give Debian a spin first; I've been using this distribution for servers for a long time, to complete satisfaction, but I've always been under the impression that support of modern hardware is somewhat lagging in comparison to more 'polished' distributions such as Mandriva and Ubuntu -- and the latter also seems another good candidate.
