Hello,
sorry for my late answer.
I am not running JACK although "qjackctl" gets started by default on login into 
DreamStudio 12.04.
"qjackctl" is a GUI which lets one start or stop JACK and handle connnects to 
it.

Thanks for your hint to AV linux and the URL 
http://www.bandshed.net/AVLinux.html, I will check that out later.
