P2P and filesharing on a LAN can actually max out provided port bandwidth. One of the LAN parties I went to actually provided gigabit ethernet to a bunch of people (via yum cha switches) and they were all actually pushing the gigabit ports quite hard (fast PCs, multiple striped SATA disks, pushed about 800mbit/sec each port.)
