This is more of a business thing than a gripe with IOS itself, but a four-liner 
from Cisco to the effect of:
 
"We won't label you heathen for daring to use optics from other vendors; and
we promise we won't break support for MSA-compliant modules in future IOS 
versions where previous versions worked fine; and
you don't need to enter any specific configuration commands to make non-Cisco 
optics work; and
we will support DOM on non-Cisco optics where feasible."
 
would be nice. Ha.
