What's at the other end of your octopus cable? If it's not connected to
anything you'd get exactly what you tell: A login screen, but nothing
afterwards.

Otherwise a "show line" can give you information on the lines
themselves. TTY speed of the line must match what is in the other end of
course. Same with parity and so on.
