Hello,
I have heard stories that normal LX single mode SFP works fine over
any MM fiber. Is that true? Does it have any distance limitation? Is
there any doc I can read so that I understand what are the various
possibilities to mix/match various SM/MM SFPs etc.
It's true. We run LX over OM1. Of course it has a distance limitation; a
commonly quoted figure is 550 metres.
There are various gotchas which can be resolved using "conditioned
launch" fibre patch leads, but we haven't experience any issues. IIRC
they're only an issue on OM1/OM2. Having said that, we have links
running stably with LX over OM1 without mode-conditioned patch leads, so
YMMV.
Cisco appear to have an interesting (if somewhat old) page:

There are lots of hits for "LX over OM[123]"
