ER and ZR optics can be used to connect to each other. I have done this
before with succes.
Keep in mind that you can use the maximum distance of the ER optic. Also
use attenuators of 10 dB if you are testing this setup in a lab.

I don't see why this wouldn't work. All optical transceivers have wideband
receivers, so you can operate mis-matched transceivers without any trouble.
Just make sure that the signal is attenuated properly in each direction.
Otherwise you will burn out the receivers at each end.
