I guess what I really need is RPR but I'm not sure whether it can be run
over Ethernet links

I suppose so yes :). But how would you decide which topology packets go?
IIRC today in Cisco you need to use DSCP to decide topology, so you'd give
each ring node their own DSCP value and you'd lose ability to offer
customers any QoS?
So perverse I really want to see someone do it.

There is lot of push right now in standard bodies to make repairs faster and
cover more scenarios. LFA IP-FRR is not end-goal, it's just interim
check-point.
