IIRC, the 7942 has a setting for wideband handset. Maybe this is set to 
something that doesn’t match the handset that’s actually connected?

Is there any reason, other than a defective phone, that a new 7942 when used in 
initiating a conference call, we can barely hear that person talking?  It's 
almost as if the voume for the mic is way down, or barely working.  I have 
checked their phone, nothing blocking the mic area.  Just wondering is there is 
some sort of setting I should be aware of or if I should replace the phone.
