They work great as a frame switch etc. The 4000 (not 4000M) can be a little
hard to upgrade (flash wise). Also, they won't take the newer modules
(NPM's) that the 4500 and 4700 can. However, they do token ring, ethernet,
and serial connectivity quite well. Do your homework first. Look at the Boot
Roms (most are 9.X). Cisco stopped shipping the original 4000 in June of
1994. They were (and still are) the mainstay of many a branch office and are
modular unlike a 2500 (except 2524/2525). Cisco has put the 4000 series to
bed though (end-of-life). Cisco now relies more on the 3600 and 7200 series.
If your building the CCIE lab and want to step up from the AGS+, buy a 4000.
If you need several routers to test CCNA or CCNP commands, get 2500's. They
can take a Enterprise Plus IOS feature set (unlike 1000's, 1600's, 1700's
etc). They also have broad industry support since they were so widely
deployed.
If your looking at new equipment for your lab, buy 2600 or 3600 series
routers. You can do almost any conceivable scenario you want with those.
Good luck.
