The latest version (2.1) of Cisco's Networking Academy curriculum still teaches
classful addressing.  It does however now mention VLSM for the first time as an
advanced topic.  This curriculum was released around Jan/Feb this year.  My
guess would be that at the CCNA level you would still assume classful unless
the test indicates otherwise.
