For 4000 series, if you buy the new integrated layer 3 services engine
(http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/cisco/mkt/switch/cat/c4000/prodlit/c4kl
3_ds.htm), it will support L3 switch.

Also, for the performance comparsion, it is not correct to just consider how
fast is the backplane speed.  You have to check what kind of machanism they
are using (e.g. shared memory, cross-bar or shared bus).  For example, a 12
x 1Gbps module will require at least 2 x 12 =24 Gbps shared memory backplane
but a 1 Gbps non-blocking cross-bar backplane will also provide the same
performance.
