SPIDs are used only for billing purposes. The switch can report to the
billing system how many times and for how long you placed ISDN calls. Some
ISDN implementations don't even use SPIDs, others use only one, and some use
two. Directory numbers are how other ISDN devices find your router when they
place a call.

If you want to place a call over one B channel only, you'll want to disable
multilink, then dial the directory number of the channel you want. This is
the ONLY thing I've ever seen the 700 series Cisco (Combinet) routers do
better than real routers; they have a very simple command-line testing
mechanism for just this type of thing.

Subject: Yet Another ISDN question

(Can you guess what I'm working on today? <g>)

What is the difference between a SPID and a directory number?

and, if I'm trying to call a single B channel at a remote site, would I call
it directly using the first portion of the SPID or would I need to call the
directory number?

Thanks, and be kind to this ISDN newbie. :-)

TIA,
John
