Assuming the described existing infrastructure, with distribution closets on
each floor, and fiber in the riser, why would you even consider putting in
one big switch and having all stations terminate directly to it? First of
all, if the wiring on each floor goes to that floor's closet, then you would
first have to have all those station wires re-pulled to the location of the
central patch panel. Mighty expensive, don't you think?

Why not content yourself with smaller switches that support VLAN. 2924's for
example, in each closet, and a 4003 in the basement? You provision each such
that you use the existing infrastructure, set up your VLAN's and life is
good.

BTW, why do you need VLAN's? Is there a problem to which the solution is
VLAN's?

Subject: Cisco Catalyst 5500 switch??

Hi,
If you have users on 3 floors of a bldg. and you had a Catalyst 5500 switch,
do all the cables from all 3 floor terminate into one central patch panel
and then to the switch?
Presently, we use 3 com 1100/3300 switches, and we have 3 floors. All the
switches in these 3 floors are connected via fiber links while the switches
themselves are connected by stright-through cables on each floors.
If I would like to introduce a Catalyst 5500 switch and create VLAN's, don't
all the cables from the jacks on each floor have to be directly connected to
the big switch -as each MAC address is mapped to each port that is mapped to
one VLAN??
How would this be done?
Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
