Not for any specific performance argument going on, but for all of them.

In the eighties, I presented several papers on SNA performance at the
Computer Measurement Group conference, held in Las Vegas.

My opening line:
"In the casino of network performance, the house always wins."

In other words, you can tune performance just so much in a system
that has unpredictable external influences.

Kenny Rogers really should have put this in an RFC:

"You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away, know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

"Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep.

   [Nice description of WRED there]

'Cause every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

Another thing to remember:

186,300 miles per second. It's not just a good idea. It's the LAW.
