When an interviewer asks you what salary you expect, you say the salary is
negotiable. If they press, say "a salary that represents my expertise and
experience and what I will bring to the table."

Get them to name the salary first. Then tell them that your expectations are
for a bit higher and negotiate it.

In the U.S. there's no such thing as a typical salary. People with the exact
same experience and job tasks get very different salaries. You get what you
negotiate.
