I think I was over looking something very simple. CLASS-LESS! If I understand things correctly. If I have 10 bits for my host section I have a total of 1024 hosts. What I was stuck on is liner break down dividing subnets in factors of 2. But ( here was my mistake ) by powers of 2, I'm not sure if I'm explaining it right, but I think I got it. I was over thinking the problem!
