Hi

Learn telco speak, It is a unique language unto itself. Acopy of
Newtons Telecomm Dictionary is recommended for proper comprehension.
once you have telco speak down it is MUCH easier to work with the phone
company as communication is much clearer and less subject to
misunderstanding. and the crews in the repair center will appreciate the
fact that you took the time and effort to learn their language.

FXO stands for Foreign eXchange Office this is how a PBX or voice
gateway connects to the PSTN if it does not support E&M (Ear & Mouth)
E&M is a signalling standard which allows PBX's and or Voice Gateways to
connect to the switch at the CO using trunk lines as opposed to multiple
FXO connections. One of the major differences between a FXO and a FXS
line is the FXO DOES NOT HAVE A RING GENERATOR it is assumed that the CO
or PBX will pick up as soon as the line goes off hook. Whearas the FXS
Foreign eXchange Station line is what the telco runs to your house when
a call is placed on the line the ring generator places a 25Hz 120 VAC
signal on the line to activate the ringer and the call is completed when
you lift the receiver this signals the ring generator to cut off and
allows the telco to start billing!

Hope this helps - Scott
CCNP now studying for the BIG ONE CCIE!
