Here is an example from OSPF. OSPF Designated Routers and Backups are
elected based on priority and Router ID. The Router ID is the highest ip
address of and ACTIVE (up/up) interface. If you wanted router X to be the
DR all the time, but you relied on the IP address of a serial line, a line
failure could cause the wrong router to be elected.
Summarizing --
Any time you have a process that references the address of another
interface, either for election purposes, or to identify itself, it is a _bad
thing_ for the referenced interface to go down. To rectify this, a Loopback
interface is used. The Loopback is always up/up unless you specifically
shut it down.

"a loopback interface is a virtual interface that never goes down ,therefore
it is an ideal line to use as the reference when using the ip unnumbered
command"
i don`t understand ... a loopback interface dosen`t go
anywhere????...how,why would i reference this ....Can i have a real world
example as i don`t seem to understand WHY i would do this....
