Good points, Cisco faces serious competition in the Internet core, not only from Juniper, from others including Avicci, IronBridge, Charlotte's Web and Pluris.  Cisco has been playing catchup in the performance department in this market for several years.

There is an article in Businessweek 9/11/00 that talks about Juniper "The Upstart That's Eating Cisco's Lunch".  The gist is:  Juniper's market share has risen from 17% to 22% as of the end of June.  At the same time, Cisco's market share in the core router market has dropped from 80% to 75%.  They talk a bit about "how" Juniper has done it, their strategies, and their technologies.

 

If Juniper keeps executing and Cisco doesn't do something about it, that market share could go lower for Cisco.  That's market share just for ultra-high-speed routers by the way...because that's all that Juniper makes.

Hello All :

Lately, I am hearing a lot of waves about Juniper routers such as m20, m40,... etc. as the core router being used by ISP's, rather than  Cisco 7000 series or 12000 series routers.
Does anyone have info on this matter...

Is Cisco being challenged by JUNIPER at the core end...

Any info would be appreciated.
