>From Austin to Austin;
Once you enable SNMP traps ("snmp-server community public RO"), these
messages go out on the wire for any monitoring station to read. As an
example, I've set up a new NOC at my current contract that will use both HP
Openview and Compaq Insight Manager. With snmp enabled on the routers and
servers, I can monitor all of my "essential" nodes with BOTH stations.
BTW: For Novell servers running NetWare 4.11 and up, you specify the trap
destination(s) in INETCFG.
A sample Cisco router config is:
"
snmp-server engineID local xzxzxzxzxzxzxzxzxzxxzzxzxx
snmp-server community public RO
snmp-server community xxxxxxx RW
snmp-server enable traps snmp
snmp-server enable traps config
snmp-server enable traps entity
snmp-server enable traps bgp
snmp-server enable traps frame-relay
snmp-server enable traps rtr
snmp-server enable traps dlsw"
