When I saw the subject line of your post I knew what the question would be.
I have seen the VTP acronym outlined both ways in different texts.  Cisco
Press Lan Switching book defines it as Vlan Trunking Protocol as does Sybex
Switching Study Guide.  I have seen it as Virtual Trunk Protocol in other
places, though.  I would go with Cisco...

When a switch is in Transparent mode it is not actively participating in the
VTP domain.  It will forward VTP advertisements out trunk ports to other
switches as long as VTP Version 2 is enabled.  If V2 is not enabled it will
not participate in anyway.  Obviously, VLANs can still be created/deleted on
the switch but they are all locally configured.
