As far as DSL... it's not Telco quality yet (problematic in some areas).
You will have problems with the whole process, from ILEC, the ISP, & the
CLEC they use (Covad, Rhythms, etc., etc.). You cannot use whatever
equipment you want with DSL. It must be compatible with the DSLAM maker. I
worked for Covad & their ATM setup was superior (@ the time). Cisco was not
compatible with their Nokia DSLAM's.

The easiest road would be to go with what you ISP recommends. They have a
lot of experience with their type of DSL. If you choose your own equipment,
you may end up with ZERO support. All the makers you list are OK. Alcatel
makes a large portion of the bridges & they're fine. I have only seen
issues with Netopia routers. Again this is no skin off your nose (other
than down-time), because the ISP's/CLEC's will be swapping these for free if
you rent.

A couple things to keep in mind:
Your ISP is overselling everything- backhaul bandwidth (the trunk your
traffic is headed to the Internet on)... & the most individual attention
you'll ever get is from the sale department

When you see a phone company truck in the neighborhood, there is a 50%
chance they will knock out your DSL (the tech's still listen for tone on the
line & DSL has none)

No matter what the ISP says, the phone company makes "NO" effort in fixing
DSL lines. The best turn-around time for an ILEC outage is 48 hours
(usually) & I have seen them go 30 days.

Just a few things I experienced...
Phil
