Yes I think you are in the wrong place, but because you asked I will give
you my two cents worth. Software firewalls are getting better and better all
the time. And being a customer of dsl or cable you need something. But I
still do not feel comfortable with a software firewall. Yes I can always say
use linux but if you do not know what you are doing that alone will make you
a target and can be very unsecure, I used linux ipchains for 6 months and
got tired of people banging on my box consuming cpu cycles(p133 80meg was my
firewall now its a linux file server and tftp server for my network). Then
you always have watchgaurd soho but 480 dollars for a dsl connection seems a
bit steep to me. But I did find one firewall and yes it is a firewall,
stateful packet inspection for under 200 bucks. It is made by a company
called multitech(model rf500s). This thing does many things other dsl so
call firewalls do not do(linksys &netgear). For starters it has extensive
logging features that can be dump to a database or regular csv file(dumps to
mySQL nice), it will actually tell you if you are being scanned and will
email you an alert or can page you. You can also block ip addresses by
source or destination, yes just like an access-list(screen shot below). And
it also has a rs232port to connect to a modem for dial out backup and it can
be used for ras so someone can dial into you and use your dsl to get out.
Better yet for you to dial in and be able to get to your machines from work
if need be. Nice little router for under 200 bucks I think it is worth it.
And looking at the number of scans I get a day very much so worth it to me.
Here is the screen shot below sorry so long winded but as you can see I am
very found of this router. And I am know way affiliated with this company
though I wish I was because I think they have hit pay dirt with this dsl
router. Though they have been making 4port and 8 port serial cards and now
modems for years.
By the way I haven't been so found of a home (soho)router since I had ISDN
with my cisco 804.
Ok more than 2cent I know.

Subject: Firewall for W2K Advanced Server

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a firewall
that could be downloaded that was manageable for W2K AS?

Preferably free if possible as this is for home use.

Thanks,
Brandon
