For back-to-back serial connections one end must be DTE and the other DCE.
The router with the DCE end must be configured to provide line clocking.
Your DTE cable most likely is a CAB-V35MT PN 72-0791-01.
If you don't use a Y cable, then your DCE cable should be a CAB-V35-FC PN
72-0792-01 (DCE and Female Winchester connector.) It works - although the
total length is 20'. If you do use a Y cable then your DCE cable can be a
CAB-V35MC PN 72-0802-01 (DCE and Male Winchester connector.)

To connect T-1 CSU/DSUs back to back (assuming RJ-45 jacks) connect pins 1&2
with 4&5 and 4&5 with 1&2. For 56k CSU/DSUs cross 1&2 with 7&8 both ways.
Using the CSU/DSUs certainly is closer to real world implementations.
Have fun!!
