Since ATM Lane is off the exam, what is the reasoning for having the Catalyst 5000 other than 802.1q and ISL Vlans? Not to sound skimpy, but the Cisco Interactive Mentor "LAN Switching" simulates the Catalyst 5000 series and part of the objective is to configure ISL and 802.1q, among many other things. I know it sounds cheezy, but maybe now that ATM Lane is gone we don't need to actually buy a Catalyst 5000 anymore? The C.I.M. indicates that it is preperation for CCIE Candidates. Assuming the worst, and I need a Catalyst 5000 series switch, would a Catalyst 2926 be a waste (not the 2926XL)? I don't know if it allows the configuration of ISL and 802.1q .. plus is there any way to test it? On the Catalyst 6500 with a Layer 3 blade you can route, but with a Layer 2 blade you can only perform Layer 2 switching. You can assign different ports to different VLANs, but something else must still perform the routing, such as a 7200 with multiple ethernet interfaces.
