Yes, we are doing the same thing, although we are using patch cables with
IBM connectors on one end and RJ-45 on the other. The only problem is if
you are using 2924XL switches. If you are using those, and someone
disconnects a patch cable form the wall, the type 1 connector loops back
(this prevents open ports in a MAU) and freaks out the 2924XL port.
There is an open bug on this, but no solution as of yet. I'm not sure if
it affects any other switches. Cisco actually did a study and concluded
that Type 1 cable is fine for 100Mb ethernet.
