The Physical layer protocol (PHY) standard deals with datat encoding,
clocking and symbols. PHY specifies a group-encoding method called 4B/5B.
This encoding method translated upper-layer octects into pairs of five
symobls
that perform the dual functions of passing data and maintaining clock
synchronization
between nodes.
