Eeekkk... The 4000 came as 4 Meg FLASH card & 16 RAM maximum build
(11.3(11a) is the highest IOS you can run). Their boot images are on ROM's
& were only updated to a max of 10.0. A kit was sold to make this router a
16/16 box. The traditional 4000M can run 16 Megs FLASH (2 SIMM bays) & 16
Megs RAM (I think it can run single 32 Meg RAM sticks). They too have boot
ROM's. The 4500's started the 3rd bay for boot FLASH images, that could be
updated as the releases became available (I have 12.1(6) boot image & IOS
running in mine). Generally- when you see the M, it means more RAM
possible.

You'll have to Ebay price these, but I sold my 2T (this is a V2 or 50 pin
Serial interface, same as the 3000's) for $150 a few months ago. The 1R's
are cheap, I think I bought one for $35. The 1E is anywhere from $250 to
$350. BRI you'll have to price. I would suggest (if you are outfitting a
router), the 4T (60 pin, like the 2500's) & the 2E is usually not too much
more than a single Ethernet (1E). When possible, try for a 4500 or above.
The 4000's are great, but 4500 & above will run ATM & Fast Ethernet
modules...
