If the network is not switched then retransmits are a side effect of
collisions. You should also see a large number of runts as on an interface.
If the network is switched then collisions are probably occuring as well due
to duplexing issue (show port counters on a Cat to verify this.)
Some devices (say a Sun box) have problems with auto negotiation with a
network device (say a Cisco 3548.) Those devices should be manually set...
