I just spent a week in the wonderful world of Chicago attending a SNAM class
and boy is my brain full! It was put on by Skyline Computers and the most
excellent instructor was Rodney Guenther.
If you are like me and have at least an introductory knowledge of SNA and
slightly better-than-introductory knowledge of token ring, source route
bridging, and dlsw but you just couldn't quite put it all together then this
is the class for you. I haven't had any real world experience with token
ring, SRB, or RSRB. We do dlsw+ but I've never really understood what was
happening under the hood.
Since I'm currently preparing for the CCIE written I've been reading a LOT
about the above topics but I still didn't have a really good grasp on them.
Thanks to Mr. Guenther I now feel that I really have a solid understanding.
I could not be more pleased with the way this class went.
Granted, there were a few topics we didn't cover very well or at all, like
APPN, FRAS, and a couple of other minor things. However, for my purposes I
wanted to leave the class with an understanding of the basics and how they
actually work together and I feel that I got that and more. Rodney worked
at IBM for 14 years, IIRC, and that really helped me to understand what we
were actually trying to accomplish.
An interesting note from class: I have always been under the impression
that to run SNA over token ring that you had to be using SRB. This is not
the case! We had SNA applications running from our desktops using
transparent bridging only between the routers in our network.
Also--and even more shocking to me--we had ethernet and token ring segments
speaking together just fine *without* translational bridging! However, this
is as long as no RIFs are being used, but it was still enlightening, as was
the entire class. It really helped to alleviate some misunderstandings I
had about all of this technology. I can't wait to go back and take the CIP
class, but that's going to be a while.
Game Update: Beginning of 2nd Period, Avs lead 1-0!!! :-)
Regards,
John
